Architecting an Enterprise Documentation Platform

Role: Lead Content Strategist & Technical Architect

Skills Applied: Information Architecture, Content Governance, Cross-Functional Leadership, Product Strategy

The Ambiguity (The Opportunity)

Internal tech surveys revealed a critical blocker for engineering productivity: developers were constantly derailed by out-of-date technical documentation lacking proper tools and features. The existing reliance on open wikis created a chaotic environment filled with duplicative, deprecated, and conflicting information. The organization needed a centralized, governed solution that did not sacrifice speed for accuracy.

The Strategy (The Solution)

I led the content strategy and information architecture for a centralized, bar-raising documentation platform. Rather than treating documentation as a static output, I approached it as a modular product. I established a framework that allowed cross-functional teams to easily onboard, build, and customize their documentation while adhering to a standardized, company-wide UI/UX.

The Architecture Highlights

  • Modular Content Ecosystem: Defined a scalable system of customizable Themes, Layouts, and Templates, allowing service teams to quickly deploy docsites that adhered to best practices.
  • Automated Governance & Freshness: Engineered workflows that utilized automated plugins to detect stale content via date-stamps, ensuring developers always accessed the most accurate information.
  • Frictionless Discoverability: Architected a "Registry App" enabling cross-site search and filtering, drastically reducing the cognitive load required to find specific API and service documentation.

Expected Business Impact

  • Replaced an uncontrolled, outdated wiki system with a governed platform designed specifically for developer workflows.
  • Reduced manual writing effort by integrating automated documentation generation directly from API code contracts.
  • Established clear ownership matrices between Product, Engineering, and Content Strategy to ensure long-term ecosystem health and accountability.
